The story behind Betty Lou

In this painting by Norman Rockwell a young girl who goes to an elementary school in the mid west has just fought her arch nemesis in the playground which won her a direct trip to the principal’s office. Through the door it’s possible to see the young girl’s mother glancing through the door at her with the principal not far behind as if to say that they don’t know what they are going to do with her. Meanwhile the young girl sits patiently on the bench with her rosy cheeks full of pride remembering to the epic fight that just took place on the playground. She knows that her mother taught her that women don’t fight but the rules could be ignored for this special day due to the fact that the girl she fought was a real mean person and in her mind she was sticking up for the others in her class. Regardless of the consequences she is very pleased with herself and for her at the moment nothing could go wrong.

Green

Green is a cool color associated with health and the environment. along with it being a natural color it is a welcoming one as well. If you go to an elementary school, hospital or jail the common theme will be the light green colors on the walls. In todays society going “green” is the new fad. Everything from taxing plastic bags to producing more fuel efficient cars is angled at going “green” and living a healthier life for you and the ones around you. This being the case green is one of the most influential colors out there at the moment. You can go to a supermarket and without a doubt the healthier food will be associated with the color green opposed to a yellow or red which would mean a normal processed food product. The color green has adapted this way due to the fact that the majority of wildlife is green. Making the color green the poster child for the “health” movement has propelled it into the public spectrum and in todays world it is impossible to ignore.

Photo Idea Index

The reason I chose this photo was due to the fact that the part of the Photo Idea Index that focused on portraits and photographing people really intrigued me. This photo was taken by a National Geographic photographer and it is of an Aboriginal Shaman who is playing a tribal instrument. When a portrait is taken you are supposed to be able to communicate with the persons actions and aspirations. The background is also very key and in this particular photo the background is blurred out so in a sense the photographer wants the viewer to direct their full attention to the Shaman and what he is doing. The background also works as negative space due to the fact that it shapes the focus around the active portrait of the Shaman. The texture of the mans face is soft and inviting when you analyze his wrinkles and lips and then when you focus out it contrasts immediately with the rough background which is blurred out on purpose. The Shaman also being placed slightly off center enforces thematic and visual conveyances of a wide open area behind him which was key in the framing of the shot. The Shamans beard brings out a rougher texture around his face which as I already noted reflects a softer composition. This photo invokes a number of the techniques discussed and studied inside and out of class which is why I believe it was perfect to chose for an assignment such as this one.
